A Mr. Rogers song for a country that forgot how to be neighbors. It holds all of it, the fear, the locked doors, the comment wars, the rent going up, and still asks the oldest question I know: would you be mine? I wanted to write something that refuses to hate back, that believes the light gets in where the walls come apart.
Lyrics
[Intro] Mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm Won't you come sit down with me? [Verse 1] It's a beautiful day to pretend we're okay A beautiful day for a smile Would you be mine? Could you be mine? There's a truck down the street with a flag on the side And a screen in the hand of a frightened child Would you be mine? Could you be mine? [Verse 2] It's a neighborly day for a locked-up door For a camera above where we knocked before Would you be mine? Could you be mine? There's a man on the news saying who we should hate And we all take the bait while the rent gets raised Would you be mine? Could you be mine? [Chorus] Won't you be my neighbor? Even when we disagree? Won't you be my neighbor? Or just a stranger next to me? I have always wanted Someone just like you But I got scared And you did too [Verse 3] It's a beautiful day for a checkout line Where the tired clerk says, "I'm doing fine" Would you be mine? Could you be mine? There's a mother counting dollars in aisle number three And a billionaire rocket on a livestream feed Would you be mine? Could you be mine? [Verse 4] It's a neighborly day for a comment war Where nobody remembers what mercy is for Would you be mine? Could you be mine? We say "thoughts and prayers" then we scroll away And the sirens sing through another school day Would you be mine? Could you be mine? [Chorus] Won't you be my neighbor? Not a headline, not a side Won't you be my neighbor? Can we look each other in the eyes? I have always wanted Someone real and true But I got lost And so did you [Bridge] Maybe we're lonely Maybe we're numb Maybe we're children Holding loaded guns Maybe the kingdom Was never above Maybe it's here When we tell the truth with love [Verse 5] It's a beautiful day to put down the phone A beautiful day to walk someone home Would you be mine? Could you be mine? There's a crack in the country and a crack in the heart But the light gets in where the walls come apart Would you be mine? Could you be mine? [Final Chorus] Won't you be my neighbor? Not my enemy, not my fear Won't you be my neighbor? Can we start again right here? I have always wanted Someone just like you A little broken And trying too [Outro] So let's make the day Less beautiful to say And more beautiful to live Would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won't you be my neighbor Again?
